For the second year in a row, we are publishing a sustainability report for the entire BIRN Group. The sustainability report for 2023 is structured according to the areas Environment (E), Social (S) and Governance (G) in order to provide the best overall picture of where we stand as a group in relation to climate, environmental, social and governance initiatives, all of which must support the upcoming EU sustainability reporting requirements.

Increasing demands and expectations for sustainability
BIRN Group will be subject to the EU sustainability reporting requirements from 2026, but we are already seeing increasing demands and expectations for sustainability from our customers. That's why we spent part of 2023 collecting data and preparing EPDs for the cast iron elements used in our customers' finished products.

- Data has been the focal point of the 2023 report, enabling us to make the best and most effective decisions when it comes to sustainability. We are constantly looking for opportunities to optimize the way we use energy in our companies, and based on the data we can, for example, calculate how we can reduce the energy consumption of the melting furnaces by maintaining a stable furnace temperature. We can also optimize energy consumption by using AI for precise dosing on our casting lines, says Claus Beier, Group CEO of BIRN Group, and continues:

- However, we also have a big task in communicating our sustainability efforts to customers, suppliers, and the surrounding community. How sustainability is perceived in different companies and industries can vary greatly, but there is no doubt that it will only become more and more important in the coming years. We are therefore very pleased and proud that we are already well on our way, says Claus Beier.

Well-being and job satisfaction are high priorities
BIRN Group is nothing without its employees, and happy and satisfied employees are crucial for us to run a sustainable business. We therefore maintain and develop our strong focus on well-being and job satisfaction for all BIRN Group employees.

- We have decided to conduct employee satisfaction surveys in all our companies every year. The survey takes the temperature of how our employees feel when they go to work with us. It also gives us an overview of whether there are any particular areas we need to focus on. We also work actively with leadership development throughout the organization so that we can continue to run a responsible group, says Claus Beier.
